4 Days in Iceland’s Highlands

THIS IS A 4 DAY MOUNTAIN BIKE ADVENTURE THAT TAKES PLACE IN SOME OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT LANDSCAPES ON THE PLANET. THE TRAILS TRAVEL ACROSS MOSTLY REMOTE MOUNTAIN ROADS IN THE HIGHLANDS OF ICELAND.
If you love epic outdoor adventures in jaw dropping scenery, this is your tour! You get to experience astonishing landscape that keeps changing before your eyes: vast meadows topped by snow-capped volcanoes, waterfalls and endless lava fields. Accommodation will be in rustic mountain huts, along with a local mountain bike guide who bikes with the group throughout the experience, and a driver who will follow in a 4WD vehicle to transport the luggage.
DAY 1: HEKLA VOLCANO
Today’s ride is a mix on an old sheep trail and a remote jeep trail that passes under the looming shadow of the infamous volcano Hekla. This route, which is known as Hellismannaleid, passes along the edge of a moss covered lava field and a black volcanic wasteland evoking the sense of being “lost in the wilderness.” Optional ride in the evening for those who wants to do a little more! DAY 2: DOMADALUR
The ride of the day is on one of the most remote mountain roads of the highlands that ends at our mountain hut. It stretches through black volcanic sands before entering the amazing Dómadalur region – characterized by smooth grass-covered mountains on one side and colorful rhyolite mountains on the other. Option to visit the hot spring of Landmannalaugar in the evening by shuttle or by bike. Hut Landmannahellir: Ride: Distance 31 miles – Elevation gain 3100 ft
DAY 3: FJALLABAK SOUTH
Today ‘s ride begins with a steep climb up to Hrafntinnusker, named after the obsidian rocks found there, followed by on one of the most exciting double tracks of the highlands. Then again along a mountainous road that leads to our hut placed in a hidden valley behind the glacier of Tindfjallajökul. Hut Hungurfit: Ride: Distance 45 km – Elevation gain 970 m / loss -960 m
DAY 4: RANGÁRBOTNAR
The last day starts off on a great highland road that follows the river Ytri-Rangá all the way down to the farmland. The view is magnificent still with Hekla volcano overlooking us on our right and the infamous glacier volcano Eyjafjallajökull on our left. About 2 hours drive back to Reykjavik with arrival in the afternoon. On Your Own Hotel in Reykjavik. Ride: Distance 31 miles – Elevation gain 1200ft
The Biking Adventure in the Highland is rated as moderate to challenging for decently skilled mountain bikers used to physically demanding routes with basic off-road riding skills.
The adventure level is high on this trip and riders can expect 5+ hours in the saddle daily. As you know, the fitter you are the more fun you’ll have.
